Meniere’s Disease and Tinnitus
November 30, 2010
Fluid build-up in the ear that is thought to be the cause of symptoms such as nausea, and dizziness is called Meniere’s disease. Another symptom associated with this disease is tinnitus. Tinnitus is a result of a disease and it is the ringing or a loud explosion sound in one or both ears. These symptoms can range from mild and tolerable to severe and debilitating. Unfortunately, there is not a cure for Meniere’s disease, but the symptoms of the disease can be treated. The treatment can include prescribed medication or natural herbal remedies that can be taken along with a change in diet to relieve these symptoms.
Meniere’s disease is more of an annoyance as it isn’t fatal and it isn’t contagious. The symptoms of this dysfunction can be ongoing but aren’t present all the time. The attacks are different for each suffer. For some, the attacks can be frequent and for others the symptom attacks can occur less often. The symptoms can last for as long as up to 24 hours or a little as a few minutes. Many people complain of having symptoms in only one ear but it can occur in both.
Tinnitus is just one symptom of Meniere’s disease but it can be treated like it is its own dysfunction. The ringing or loud noise in the ears can cause hearing loss. People that suffer from tinnitus in most cases are hearing this sound when no sound is present on the outside of the inner ear. However, there are cases where the sound is caused by sound that can be heard by others. Tinnitus can also be caused by aging or exposure to loud sounds, medication, and Otis media.
Some suggestions to try to help elevate the symptoms of tinnitus is to wear ear plugs if you will be around loud sounds. Some people even create background noises to help to distract the noise associated with tinnitus. This can be used with the ear plugs as another way to deal with the ringing or buzzing sounds. Also it is recommended to avoid substances such as alcohol, caffeine and nicotine as these can make the symptoms worse.
